Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is naturally occurring in soil, rocks and building material.  According to the EPA, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind cigarette smoking.

While many people are very educated about radon, the most common question we get is:

“Do you have much radon in SW Florida?”

The answer is yes.  While we do not have the levels found in the north east, we do have a substantial amount of radon here in Naples, Marco Island, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Lehigh and other areas of Florida.

The most recent studies show an average of 25% of the homes tested for radon in Collier and Lee counties tested positive for levels higher than recommended by the EPA.  This means your Florida home has a 1 in 4 chance of testing high.

“Do condominiums and high rise buildings have radon issues?”

Believe it or not, yes.  High rise buildings have some of the highest levels that we, and other radon testers find.  The main issue seems to be the trucked in fill dirt and/or imported materials.

So yes, high rise and other condo buildings need tested for radon. Fixing radon issues in high rise buildings can be more complex and expensive than fixing radon issues in single family homes, so it is actually more important to test for radon in condominiums.
